Which type of elevated work platform is right for your needs?

Elevated work platforms (EWP), otherwise known as access work platforms or lifts come in a range of shapes and sizes, and are useful for tricky situations where you need to work at height. By providing a harnessed platform, and using the power of hydraulic force for lifting, EWPs can significantly improve health and safety when working at heights, and help you to get the job done quicker.

In this article, we compare the three types of lifts that we have available for hire: articulating boom lifts, telescoping boom lifts and scissor lifts.

Articulating boom lifts:

Also known as a knuckle boom, this type of platform has multiple sections that are connected by joints which allow the platform to hinge. This is useful for gaining access to work areas that are over barriers and obstacles. For tight and hard-to-reach places, articulating boom lifts can provide the perfect access solution.

Benefits of using an articulating boom lift:

  • Great way to access confined work areas.
  • Extremely maneuverable - useful for getting over obstacles and working on uneven terrain.
  • Suitable for working indoors.
  • Can be positioned in a variety of ways.
  • Two functioning joints provide added reach when required.

You can find our articulating boom lift rentals here, which are perfect for both indoor and outdoor purposes.

Telescoping boom lifts:

Also known as a stick boom or straight boom, telescoping boom lifts have extending sections with a ‘man bucket’ at the end for people to safely work in. They are useful when accessing an area blocked by difficult terrain and places where the lift itself cannot get to.

Benefits of using a telescoping boom lift:

  • Capable of performing a wide range of jobs.
  • Great for smaller job sites.
  • Ideal for working from a distance.
  • Useful for working on roofs and lifting materials to elevated levels of a building.
  • Great for increasing your work speed.
  • Often suitable for working on rough terrain.

We have a range of telescoping boom lifts that have a reach of up to 20m. Check out our listings here.

Scissor lifts:

Scissor lifts provide a very stable platform with a sizeable working area. Perfect for both indoor and outdoor uses, scissor lifts are great for working on rough terrain and in warehouses alike. They come in a range of sizes and designs to suit a wide range of purposes. Scissor lifts are great for areas where you are able to access the ground beneath the work site. Compared to boom lifts, scissor lifts can only lift things vertically.

Benefits of using a scissor lift:

  • Larger working platform.
  • Very stable, and maneuverable.
  • Ideal for use as ‘mobile scaffolding’.
  • Wide range of indoor and outdoor uses.
  • Suitable for rough terrain.
